These two artists lived and worked in times of revolutionary change in the 20th century art world. They reacted to the changes in individual if parallel ways. Both commenced as figurative artists with roots in realism, each became influenced by the rush of contemporary currents: Chastel by fauvism and cubism; Gorsline by cubism and certain achievements of early photography. The still life theme may have stemmed from academic concerns, the techniques of presentation did not. The exhibition allows us to discover the “thought made flesh” achieved by Chastel and the “sequential simultaneity” rendered by Gorsline. The works of both Chastel and Gorsline manifest a subtle combination o f technique, sensibility and intellect.
Roger Chastel is a prestigious guest artist and we are particularly happy to exhibit his work as a part of a very recent movement to reintroduce it into the international art scene. Earlier his works were being steadily acquired for important public and private collections and exhibited by museums throughout Europe, the Americas , North Africa and Japan . He was elected a member of the French Institute of Arts in 1968 ; he taught at the Beaux Arts Schoolof Paris.
Douglas Gorsline's work was exhibited regularly in the United States and in France , Belgium and Germany . He received a great many awards and his works are in several museum, institutional and private collections. He taught at the National Academy of Design in New York City before moving to France in 1964. He was the first American artist invited to China (1973).
