This year in honor of our association with FoR ENC of Greenville North Carolina we have asked a prominent artist of East Carolina University , Greenville NC to present an exhibition. Like Douglas Gorsline, Michael Dorsey excels in watercolors, is a world traveler and delights in creating images of the countryside and city landscapes related to his experiences.

With Dorsey we will have glimpses of Burgundy , Scotland , South Carolina , Mississippi , Georgia , Mexico , Estonia , Egypt , England , Finland , Russia & Norway .From Gorsline we'll have views of Florence , Venice , London , Paris , Dijon , the French and English Countryside and China .

While the two artist's have common interests (i.e both are illustrators) they undertake their creations in contrasting ways. Gorsline creates his oils and watercolors (though not his book illustrations) on the spot; Dorsey paints from personal remembrances, inspired by the effect of a site on his imagination, using memory, drawings and notations in his carnet de route as he progresses. Dorsey starts with a pencil sketch- often erased; Gorsline painted or drew directly in watercolor , oil or ink..

The works of both show they are affected by the emotional power of what they were seeing or remembering . Both are seen to be pertinent observers; at the same time their works demonstrate strong abstract qualities. Gorsline regarded the scene and rendered it precisely though in terms of his sequential simultaneity., Dorsey revisualizes what had struck him as essential. .Dorsey's art is rooted in time, place and remembrances, Gorsline's in time as it passes and place seen in a sequence of points of view

As to color Dorsey painting from memory chooses his for their emotional impact; the true color is not his aim. Gorsline, painting from actuality, having chosen what he was painting because of its emotional impact wanted to depict the color and light exactly as as it existed. Each achieves a lyric effect

In this exhibition the reality of memory takes its place/lives side by with a reality to be remembered.:.

Our presentation will include thirty watercolors by Michael Dorsey, a special selection of watercolors by Gorsline in addition to the works which conform to our title in the permanent collection.
